As the world’s leading trade fair for the wire and cable industry, wire Düsseldorf brings together thousands of professionals, exhibitors, and innovators – and for IWMA, it’s also an opportunity to lead by example in how we approach sustainability.

At the last edition of the exhibition in 2024, IWMA used 1,027 single-use plastic water bottles on our exhibition stand to keep our team and visitors hydrated. Recognising the environmental impact of this – and the role single-use plastics play in contributing to global waste and water pollution – we knew it was time for a change.

According to the European Commission, plastic packaging accounts for over 60% of marine litter, and globally, nearly 300 million tonnes of plastic waste are produced each year – much of it designed for single use and often ending up in waterways and oceans.

Taking action for cleaner water and a cleaner planet!

At wire Düsseldorf 2026, IWMA will be switching to reusable rPET water bottles made from previously used and recycled plastic, and we’ll be encouraging all members and visitors to refill their bottles at on-stand filtered water dispensers – completely removing the need for single-use plastic bottles.

This change marks the start of broader IWMA initiatives to reduce our environmental footprint at exhibitions and encourage more responsible practices across the industry. Wherever possible, we’ll also be using sustainable, recycled, and recyclable materials on our stand – including fully recyclable paper cups made from sustainably sourced materials for use in our hospitality areas.

We’re committed to making sustainability and water responsibility key considerations in everything we do at the show – from hydration to printed materials.

“Sustainability is about progress – and it’s important that we match innovation in our industry with responsibility to the planet,” said Jessica Bennett, Executive Manager. “By removing single-use plastics from our stand where possible, we hope to inspire others to think more consciously about their impact – and how small changes can protect our oceans and water systems.”

From championing sustainability to supporting global collaboration, IWMA’s presence at wire Düsseldorf reflects our commitment to shaping a more responsible, resource-conscious future for the wire and cable industry.

To support a refill-first mindset beyond the exhibition hall, visitors can also use the Closca Water – Refill Everywhere app to locate public drinking fountains and refill stations worldwide.

IWMA members: speak to us on stand to collect your reusable bottle – and be part of our sustainability pledge! We look forward to welcoming you in Düsseldorf.
